Day 5 Dingle to Killarney

Today was our morning to explore Dingle town and shop before heading to our next destination, Killarney. It is sad departing Pax Guesthouse and John because of the realization we are staying in an apartment next and will have to do our own breakfast after having such wonderful ones provided since our arrival in Ireland. We mention this to John and what do you think he does? He goes in the kitchen and gets the left over scones from breakfast and wraps them up for us to take with us!

The one thing on the agenda this morning while everyone is together (before scattering to shop) is to visit the Diseart Institute of Education and Celtic Culture in a convent behind St Mary's Church. Boy were we in for the biggest surprise of our trip! Located in the former convent chapel, and thus not seen by others until recently, are twelve stained glass lancet (six double) windows depicting scenes from the life of Christ by Irish artist Harry Clark (1889-1931). Our delightful guide told us at one time the nuns thought it too dark in their prayer room and considered having these windows removed. Sadly, Harry Clark died at a young age from mercury poison working with the lead used in his windows.

I will tell you right now no picture I can take will show you the real beauty OR incredible detail of these windows. He used a lot of sea creatures to fill in. I have never seen so much detail anywhere, and I am typing this the next morning!

The Sermon on the Mount

The Agony in the Garden

Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene

After some power shopping in Dingle we drove 1 ½ hours to our next destination, Killarney and checked in at Park Place Apartments which are lovely. We have a patio out back and full kitchen with a washer/dryer all in one machine. We stop in the Polish grocery store which is next door. Labels were impossible to read but the pictures on the labels worked. The deli guy had a good laugh with us trying to figure out what we were buying.
Once again, we are all exhausted and within minutes of going to bed we are sound asleep. As my grandson Joe says, It's a nice day :)

  3. Ok enough already. That was posted Saturday and it's now Monday night. Now I'm worried that you haven't posted and something is wrong. I must sound like a Jewish mother, but that's how I think. Let's get our act in high gear; a little less sightseeing and a little more posting to ease my warped mind.
    Love ya.

  4. Joy you didn't take a course in Polish before you left? Sounds like you all are having a great time. For Tim, just tell Joy, no more BCCM or mutiny will occur.
